A crawl to the finish
Athletes push their bodies to the limit. Most seek perfection in a single sport. But some need more than that to test their endurance. Honolulu, Hawaii was once home to several long-distance endurance competitions. There was the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 miles), Around-Oahu Bike Race (112 miles) and Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). But a U.S. Navy Commander wanted more. So in 1978, he ran all three back to back. The Ironman was born. Finishing such a grueling race is a major feat. In 1997, two women pushed themselves to their physical limits. Just 100-feet from the finish their bodies began to shut down. This is one of the most memorable finishes in Ironman history.
